The Principal's Desk

Alberta Grant JohnsonI am delighted to continue serving as principal of the SWBOCES middle school and high school grades 6-12 TSP Programs located in Irvington High School.  The Irvington TSP team is excited to continue and to expand partnerships with families, sending districts and with the Irvington School district. Our programs are designed to provide academic and social/emotional support to students and to help them develop the necessary skills needed to meet their potential while working towards achieving commencement.

This year we have a lot of new and returning students in our grades 6-12 (TSP) Therapeutic Support Program. Our mission is: “To work as a team to consistently provide high quality, differentiated social/emotional and academic support to students that present with a range of abilities and needs.”

Our program specializes in meeting each student where he or she is; providing a nurturing, welcoming, inclusive school community and helping all students develop the strategies and tools that will enable them to grow emotionally and academically so that they may meet success in their post-secondary lives. Because of our lower student-to-staff ratios of 12:1:1, 8:1:1 (gr.7) and 8:1:2 (gr. 6) instruction may be individualized and/or modified to meet the needs of each student. All students work towards a Regents Diploma and may be eligible to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma, Local Diploma and/or a CDOS Credential. Students may also have the opportunity to enroll in mainstream classes and/or activities once they have demonstrated the capacity to independently and successfully navigate in a general education setting.

I continue to be grateful to have the privilege of working with each and every student and to partner with families, sending districts and the Irvington School District so that all students have the opportunity to achieve success. My door is always open to address any questions or concerns or to hear your input.

Sincerely,

Alberta Grant-Johnson, Principal

Presentation on hearing loss allows students to reflect on its challenges

Melinda Pittis discussed several scenarios related to living with hearing loss during a presentation to English teacher Kathleen Shenenfield’s class at SWBOCES' Irvington High School-based Special Services location. “Imagine sitting in the classroom, trying to listen to a teacher,” said Ms. Pittis, a Teacher of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. “You’re trying so hard to focus on what’s being said.” Students have been reading El Deafo, a loosely autobiographical graphic novel about author Cece Bell’s experience growing up with deafness.
